Home insurance is usually taken to be contents insurance. This will cover loss or damage to your possessions whilst in your home however caused however there will be no coverage for personal malicious damage. The term possessions refer to anything not permanently attached to your property’s structure. In other words contents insurance would cover your kitchen furniture but it would NOT cover any fitted units. Anything and everything that is permanently attached is covered by your home building insurance.
The most frequent causes of damage are theft and accidents in the home. With the past two winters in the UK there has been a surge in claims for burst and leaking pipes. If you experience damage to your belongings as a result of storm, fire or flooding or even aircraft crashing into your home then you would be covered. It is difficult to think what would not be covered on a full policy apart from deliberate damage. Any damage caused by you to your own contents would definitely not be treated as a valid claim!
Accidental damage caused by yourself may be covered but you will probably find there is a variation of coverage between various policies so read the terms fully before you purchase the home insurance.
