A compromise agreement could be used by your employer to get rid of your services and if that is the case you need to know what they are and more importantly how to deal with them.

A compromise agreement is a way for an employer and employee to come to a full and final settlement that prevents either side from taking things further. On their part they may wish to stop you from taking them to tribunal if they are making you redundant without good cause or stopping you from working for a competitor after you leave taking your knowledge with you.

For your part you can use compromise agreements to your advantage. There is no law that says you must sign them so if you are presented with one you can begin to dictate the terms to a degree as they will want you to sign. This may mean getting a larger settlement figure. This is the reason you must know what they are and how they work. You should when presented with one get legal advise as it isn’t always clearly written.

So be sure to protect yourself by understanding a compromise agreement. After all it is better to know about them and never need that information that to need that information and not have it.
